Dark Light

The 8th Annual Giving Bowl was a resounding success. It combined the thrill of football with the spirit of giving to make a meaningful impact in the community. Hosted at Avalon Park in McDonough, GA, the youth-led event brought together families, young athletes, and changemakers for an unforgettable day of action, inspiration, and community service.

Founded by CJ Matthews at just 10 years old, the Giving Bowl has evolved into a powerful movement that mobilizes youth to lead with purpose. This year, the event Fed 250+ families distributed 1,000 toys, providing warmth and inspiration to countless hearts.

Highlights of the Day

• Youth Football Tournament: Four local 6U and 8U teams, including the North Henry Tigers and Georgia Elite Stallions, Douglasville Tiger Cubs, and Super Sports Elite Mustangs, played competitive games, showcasing teamwork and resilience.

• Special Guest Appearance—Terry Allen: The former college athlete and actor from the Starz hit series BMF inspired the crowd with his message of resilience, service, and community leadership. Beyond his speech, Terry Allen spent the day engaging with attendees, playing football, distributing food, and connecting with kids and families.

• Community Impact Initiatives: The Giving Bowl lived up to its name with a food giveaway, a blanket drive, and a Toys for Tots distribution, ensuring families in attendance had essential items and holiday cheer.

A Movement of Change

The Giving Bowl exemplifies the power of youth-led initiatives. CJ Matthews, now 17, and a junior and athlete at Eagles Landing Christian Academy in McDonough, reflected on the event’s success, saying, “I’m so proud to see year eight in the books. What started as an idea to give back and a $500 Disney grant has grown into something that’s truly making a difference.”

His younger brother and co-leader, Kollin Matthews, an all-star athlete, also played a vital role, continuing to inspire his peers through storytelling and action as he played in the 8U game. Together, the brothers recently released their book, Making Change with the Good Brothers, available on Amazon. The book encourages kids to take hands-on steps to make a difference in their communities.

A Day of Heartfelt Moments

From the cheers on the football field to the smiles of families receiving blankets and toys, the event was filled with moments that touched the soul. Terry Allen’s involvement added an extra layer of excitement, as he didn’t just deliver a speech—he fully immersed himself in the event, creating memories for the children and families present.

About Blankies 4 My Buddies

Blankies 4 My Buddies began in 2013 as a way for the Matthews family to turn a personal loss into a mission of hope and healing. Over the past 11 years, the organization has grown to include impactful programs like the award-winning Blanket Box Project and Making Change Workshops, which empower youth to create comfort items for those in need.

As CJ and Kollin Matthews continue to lead as GivingTuesday Spark leaders and youth ambassadors for the global generosity movement, their efforts are an inspiring testament to how young changemakers can transform their communities—and the world.

Looking Ahead

The Giving Bowl continues to grow in impact and reach, solidifying its place as a must-attend event. With eight years of success, CJ Matthews and his family are already looking for new ways to expand their giving and community empowerment mission into other cities and maybe one day during Super Bowl weekend.
